Stuart to Host Virtual Witness Slip Seminar
COLLINSVILLE, Ill. – To promote local engagement in the legislative process, state Rep. Katie Stuart, D-Edwardsville, in partnership with state Rep. Jay Hoffman, D-Belleville, is hosting a virtual Witness Slip Seminar on Monday, Feb. 14.
“There are many ways individuals can be involved in the legislative process and share their opinions on bills,” said Stuart. “Witness slips are a useful and simple method for individuals or organizations to communicate their position on an issue to all members of the legislature.”
As part of the legislative process in Illinois, witness slips are a tool for individuals or organizations to create a public record of their stance on a bill and help legislators gauge the public’s opinion on the potential legislation. Witness slips can be filed on any bill that is scheduled to be heard in a committee and will be read into the official record when the bill is heard in committee. The seminar will explain the process of submitting witnesses.
“A lot of new bills will be introduced to committees in the coming weeks, and filing a witness slip is a great way to publicly weigh in on them,” said Stuart. “I encourage anyone who would like to learn about the process or needs a refresher to attend this seminar. Additionally, residents are always welcome to reach out to my office with their views on issues.”
The seminar will be held on Monday, Feb. 14 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. A Zoom link will be provided upon RSVP to repkatiestuart@gmail.com.
